From Our Back Deck

by Terry Stamper

I see for miles to the west
If I look hard, yes, there’s Saskatchewan
And in her corner kitchen
In a small town, there
Is my aunt, making cookies by the dozen

From our back deck
I hear the geese flying south
Heading to Mexico
Five hundred at once
I look up at each majestic bird
With my daughter I am swept up, up, up!

From our back deck
I enjoy our spruces growing to the north
Each year they stretch
My husband and I ...
Get wiser
As our daughters age

From our back deck
I embrace our house and the east
Each cedar shake nailed with skill
The story of our lives together
Built by my husband’s hands
So we can enjoy the view ...

From our back deck.
